Success and Failure

Mrs. Dunham, my high school French teacher, always said that to anticipate something is what makes the 'something' fun and exciting. Of course, this is not a direct quote because she expressed this more elegantly, but you get the idea.

Well, every year I anticipate baking holiday cookies. Yep, it's true. (Except my first couple of years of college... I chose to be a sullen teenager 3 years too late). I am not exactly a whiz at baking but my mother will tell you that I love the activity. For the life of me I can never remember technical terms for 'fluffing the eggs' or 'that gooey consistency' or 'soupy butter', there are a plethora of other terms I wind up using that even I can't remember haha. Anyway, it's a blast. In fact baking an obscene amount of cookies with my mother is probably what I'll miss most about this holiday season. To try and stay peppy and not get too sad I'm going to dive into cookie world this weekend. Soon I'll have pictures for you of chocolate crinkles and pecan silces à la Emily. If they look disastrous it's because I didn't have time or credit to call my mom and ask if she thought the consistency of the batter was right :) Also, I'll probably grease the cookie sheets when I'm not supposed to (just to be safe) and will wind up with half the amount of product I expected because I tasted the batter too many times.

Last Saturday, I woke up at 11am and said to myself: "It's about time I make myself some brunch. I've been here for two months and am missing a hearty meal of eggs, pancakes, and bacon/sausage." So I went for it! Usually my pancakes turn out alright but this time I wanted to be all healthy and adventurous. The result was mushy applesauce pancakes. The positive side is that they tasted pretty good, considering I didn't have any syrup. The sweetness of the applesauce did wonders. I tried flipping some of these guys in the frying pan and came up with:

I burnt one pancake, indecently flipped two, undercooked another and wound up with one good pancake. Don't kid yourselves, I ate the undercooked and the burnt cakes as well.
I also had a chance to make some Reese's Peanut Butter No-Bake Bars, thanks to Sara and Michaela. These turned out just fine, I didn't have to heat anything up.
In conclusion: I am hoping to regain my confidence in the art of manipulating ingredients with the holiday cookie-baking session. p.s. I also have half of a pumpkin that I need to use up, so expect an entry regarding several uses for and pictures of pumpkin products.

  1. I loved this entry! I made holiday cookies this week too. Your picture of the pancake actually looks like a fancy pastry or something. :)
